Together, we’ll discover what medieval life in Scotland was really like. You’ll be able to ask me questions and chat with fellow participants as we explore this city steeped in tradition, history, and folklore. Edinburgh is the ancient capital of Scotland and the town’s layout has remained more or less the same as it was when created 900 years ago. We’ll begin at the Mercat Cross which was the hub of the open-air market in the Medieval days and also used for public punishments. From here we continue to the Law Courts and admire its neo-classical facade. Reaching the front of St Giles Cathedral, we see some unique traditions and reminders of the past such as the Heart of Midlothian, and at the lawn market, I’ll share the tale of the city's outlaw hero, Deacon Brodie.Next, we go through one of the eerie closes; these tiny streets and back courtyards are covered on either side of the Royal Mile from top to bottom. Here we learn how this makes up the layout of the old town of Edinburgh and why its nickname is “Auld Reekie.”Along the way up to Castlehill, we’ll stop at some of the main attractions of the city such as the Whisky Experience, Camera Obscura, and Edinburgh Castle. If we are lucky, we may hear some bagpipes! We’ll also pass by the Witchery which was once used as a prison for those convicted of witchcraft. It is now a local restaurant - have you ever tasted Scottish cuisine? Finally, we will end our tour with spectacular views of the New Town and the famous Princes Street.
