Every winter, Ljubljana changes character. Local artist Urban Modic dresses the city in more than 50 kilometres of lights, strung along the Ljubljanica and through the streets of the old town. This year his story is called "Chaos? Or maybe not?", and the streets carry it as they wait for New Year 2027. You will start on Prešernov trg, the square where the city gathers and where the lights set the tone for everything that follows. From there you will walk into Mestni trg, past the old town houses and the town hall, with the decorations overhead changing shape and rhythm as you go. Then you will follow the Ljubljanica riverbanks. The water doubles the light, and the bridges and willow-lined embankments become part of the design. You will finish along Breg, the old riverside quay on the quieter side of the stream, where the crowds thin and the lights have the water almost to themselves. Along the way you will hear how Urban Modic builds his yearly story, what the idea of chaos has to do with a city at the turn of the year, and how Ljubljana's residents live with this annual transformation of their streets. Come for a stroll through the old town, look up, and take some inspiration for 2027 with you.
